About the 8280-422
8280-422 is a digital speed control designed to be used with low-speed (less than 100 rpm) diesel engines. There is another version of this Woodward digital speed control, model 8280-423, which is designed for medium- and high-speed engines (over 100 rpm).
This 723PLUS Digital Marine Speed Control is intended for use in dual-engine marine applications where unit clutching and mechanical load sharing are required. The 8280-422 will regulate the speed and load of diesel engines in these applications.
723PLUS model 8280-422 has a variety of control features. This includes several fuel limiting features, such as start fuel limiting, torque fuel limiting, and manifold or external fuel limiting. Soft loading/unloading, clutch control and permissive logic, flexible coupling torsional filtering, and single-throttle operation are just a few more examples of the features included in this control. Woodward 723PLUS Manual 02881 has a complete list of features and details on each one.
Manual 02881 also has complete information on the 8280-422 I/Os, some of which are configurable. A few of the inputs are two-speed sensing inputs, which can be used for MPUs or proximity switches; eight discrete inputs; and two redundant communication ports. Outputs include three configurable 4–20 mA outputs, two configurable alarm relays, a serial port that supports a handheld programmer, and a 0–200 mA actuator output, among others.
