About the 8280-423
8280-423 is a 723PLUS Digital Marine Speed Control. It is one of two such controls released by Woodward in the company’s 723PLUS series. This model is the version designed for medium- and high-speed engines (over 100 rpm). The 8280-423 is a low-voltage 723PLUS control rated for 18-40 Vdc. A low-voltage model such as this requires 40 W and has a switching power supply, which requires a 7 A current surge for proper starting.
The 723PLUS model 8280-423 is intended for dual-engine marine applications where mechanical load sharing is required. It can regulate the load and speed of diesel engines used in such applications, including those with flexible couplings. Magnetic pickups (MPUs) or proximity switches may be used for sensing engine speed via the control’s two-speed signal inputs.
There are many features included in the 8280-423, such features include a single-throttle operation, flexible coupling torsional filtering, and several features for fuel limiting. Woodward 723PLUS Manual 02881 has complete details on all the 8280-423 available features.
This speed control has several types of I/Os, some of which are configurable. Two alarm relay outputs are user-configurable, with thirteen status choices from which to choose, and a communication port supports a handheld programmer for monitoring and programming the control. Two more communication ports offer redundant communication for proper loading and clutching.
