About the 8280-424
Woodward model 8280-424 is the company’s 723PLUS Digital Industrial Speed/Performance Control ‘424’. This unit's primary function is to control the speed, ignition timing, and air/fuel ratio of reciprocating engines in variable speed applications. Engine and turbocharger speeds are monitored via two-speed signal inputs, which support using two proximity switches or MPUs. These can also be used for redundant engine speed sensing.
To monitor control functions, the 8280-424 supports Woodward LINKnet input/output nodes via a LON channel, and one thermocouple LINKnet module is included. Control interface options are supported via three serial ports. These options include Watch Window (Woodward’s PC-based software interface); a handheld programmer; an external Modbus master device (such as an HMI); and the optional Performance ‘424’ Control View (part number 8928-057), a PC-based graphical user interface that is used for monitoring and adjusting the 8280-424 software parameters.
The 8280-424 has several I/Os, some of which are configurable. Analog Output #1, for example, can be configured to one of several control parameters, such as Engine Speed, Fuel Actuator Demand, Air Manifold Pressure, and Turbocharger Assist PID Control Signal. A dedicated 4-20mA current signal is provided to the ignition timer by Analog Output #2 for variable ignition timing control. A full breakdown of the Woodward 8280-424 I/Os is included in the manuals found in the "Manuals" tab on this page.
