About the 8280-481
8280-481 is a high voltage (90 to 150 Vdc) controller and is one of the Woodward 723PLUS Analog Load Sharing Digital Speed Control units designed for low-speed engines. Low-speed engines are those rated at 130 rpm or less. A low-voltage version of this low-speed controller is also available, as are high and low-voltage options for high-speed engines.
Control options of the 8280-481 include:
- Magnetic pickups (minimum 400 Hz magnetic pickup frequency)
- Proximity switch input (speed signal frequencies below 1000 Hz)
- 4-20 or 0-200 mA actuator outputs
- 0-1 or 4-20 mA analog outputs
- Tandem actuator outputs
Two serial ports and a LON channel offer several communication options, including external Modbus compatible devices, Woodward LinkNet I/O nodes, ServLink devices (for clients such as Watch Window and Control View), and a Woodward’s Hand Held Programmer (part 9907-205).
723PLUS Digital Speed Control for Reciprocating Engines— Analog Load Sharing Installation and Operation Manual 02879 has more information on accessories that are compatible with this controller. This includes the communication options listed above as well as devices dedicated to loading control and other generator control functions.
The 8280-481 is in a sheet-metal chassis for hazardous locations, but precautions still need to be taken when selecting a location for the 723PLUS Speed Control. The hardware is susceptible to electromagnetic interference and should be protected from high-voltage and high-current devices. It should also be protected from vibration, and direct exposure to water (including condensation-prone environments) and should be mounted in a location where adequate ventilation and a –40 to +70 °C temperature range are maintained during operations. Manual 02879 has additional safety precautions and should be consulted before selecting a mounting location for this control.
