About the 8290-185

Speed control model 8290-185 from the Woodward Electrically Powered Governor series is made to be part of a full EPG system. These systems are designed to work on prime movers. Model 8290-185 is compatible with movers powered by gasoline and natural gas. No hydraulic oil supply or mechanical drive is needed for operating this speed control product. Additional information about models 8290-185 includes:

  • System battery voltage of 24 volts.
  • Maximum power consumption of 95 watts.
  • Minimum magnetic pickup of 1.5 VRMS.
  • Ambient temperature range of -40 to 75 degrees Celsius.
  • 5A battery charger capability.
  • A start fuel limit.
  • Optional use with ramp generator.
  • Compliant with EU Directive.

Speed control product model 8290-185 is an isochronous device to only works with specific actuators. It can work with models 1724 and 524. Adding a ramp generator will allow for longer deceleration and acceleration rates. It can be installed with 12 AWG and 14 AWG wiring, and proper length requirements should be followed.

When mounting the 8290-185 with the chosen actuator, either 524 or 1724, the actuator must be located where linkage is possible. The chosen linkage and its linearity must match the fuel control on the unit. The actuator also needs to match the direction in which the rotation for the increased fuel will match the fuel control's direction. If these instructions are not followed, it could cause issues between the operation of the 8290-185 and chosen actuator. For more instruction on the linkage of the actuator and this unit refer to chapter two of Woodward Manual 82493.

Frequently Asked Questions about 8290-185

When the Automatic Power Transfer and Load Control accessory is added to the 8290-185 model, how is it used?

The Automatic Power Transfer and Load Control (APTL) accessory will provide bumpless paralleling and adjustable speed ramps adding to the unloading of the attached unit of the 8290-185 governor. The APTL also allows for peak shaving, low and high limits for generator control, and import-export. It should be noted that the APTL feature also requires a load sensor.

The 8290-185 model can also be used with an Automatic Generator Loading Control (AGLC); how does the AGLC work in conjunction with this model?

When the 8290-185 model is being used with an Automatic General Load Control feature, it will provide soft loading and unloading if the 8290-185 model has been set into a load-sharing system alongside controlled rates. The tracks on the AGLC feature will provide a smoother power transfer when loading or unloading; please note that this feature also requires a load sensor.

What must the battery charger capability be when used in conjunction with the 8290-185 model?

The battery charger capability for this model is, at minimum, 5 A when the governor is running and energized. The maximum power consumption used along with this model is 95 watts.
