About the 8200-201
The 8200-201 is the 24Vdc input, de-energize-to-trip model offered in Woodward’s ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection series. Prime mover speed is sampled every 5ms using three magnetic pickups (MPUs), and three individual speed calculations are performed. Relay output is determined by a hardware two-out-of-three vote based on those calculations.
Error indicator LEDs on the front of the module make it easy to quickly catch improper operations, such as a tripped speed-sensing unit, a failed MPU, or errors in any individual unit’s CPU.
Each speed-sensing unit in model 8200-201 has its own power supply, touchpad, and LCD display. It’s through these three touchpads that each unit is separately programmed. The three units can be put into monitor mode or program mode, which is accessed through a single key lock for all three units. This feature acts as a convenient safety measure against unauthorized changes.
Woodward recommends testing the overspeed of each of the three speed-sensing units of model 8200-200 weekly. To reduce downtime, the units are designed to be tested one at a time, keeping the other two units in complete control during testing.
