About the 8200-203

There are two versions offered in the ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection series by Woodward: de-energize-to-trip and energize-to-trip. Model 8200-203 is the 120 Vac/dc input model of the de-energize-to-trip versions. This model consists of three separate, identical speed-sensing units, each with its own power supply. These units sense prime mover speed through magnetic pickups and perform individual speed calculations, which are then used in a two-out-of-three hardware vote.

Model 8200-203 has a rich feature set, including remote reset, LED performance indicators, built-in self-test, an alarm output, and a key lock.

The LED performance indicators are located on the front panel of the units, alongside a touchpad and digital display. Together, the LEDs and digital display offer a quick, clear overview of the current functional status of the 8200-203 system.

The built-in self-test feature is achieved through a built-in frequency generator. This setup allows for individual units to be tested while the prime mover remains online. During testing of a unit, complete control is simply taken on by the two other units. This configuration also means that should anyone speed-sensing unit fail on the 8200-203, it can be replaced with little to no downtime required.

Additional features of and instructions for Woodward’s ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection model 8200-203 can be found in the company’s manual for the series: Installation and Operation Manual 85205 (F).

Each subsystem can be replaced (after disconnecting the supply power at the external disconnecting means) while the other two subsystems are powered without tripping the prime mover. - AX Control Inc.
