This might be a metal chair leg, a metal shelf, or a metal desk. This serves as a ground which the static electricity is attracted to. The static drains to the grounded surface and leaves the board unharmed.

If the wrist strap is connected to a wooden or plastic object, the static will not exit your person and instead will accumulate on the board. Make sure the wrist strap is properly connected to a grounded surface on one end and firmly wrapped to your wrist on the other end.
