About the UR-7GH

General Electric Multilin’s UR-7GH is a Communications Module that provides two channels for inter-relay communications. The first channel is type G.703, while the second channel functions at 1300 nm and is a single-mode ELED channel.

GE’s UR-7GH removes the need for expensive copper hardwiring that traditionally allows communications between relays, allowing the process to occur through a fiber optic system instead. This can save on both installation costs and wiring complexity, streamlining the system.

While some users may fear the technical software/data transmission issues that can arise with inter-relay communications, the UR-7GH and Universal Relay units are equipped with monitoring and protective capabilities that reduce channel errors and alert users to channel failure when problems do occur. Certain COMMS modules may have either one or two channels of communication depending on the certain order code of that specific module. The UR-7GH has the 7G order code. This order code designates the COMMS module has having two channels. The first channel (Channel 1) is the G.703 channel. The second channel (Channel 2) has a 1300 nm single-mode ELED. The UR-7GH looks similar aesthetically to other COMMS modules with the matte black finish of the module. The type 7 communications modules have multiple variations with a variety of channel characteristics. Not all of the options are applicable to every UR series universal relay. The applicable order codes will be found in the channel communication options section of the universal relay order code. All of the fiber modules (COMMS modules) use a type of connector called an ST type connector. The T60 is a certain universal relay, which does make use of the type 7 series communication modules. These COMMS modules allow messaging directly between devices. Communication channels are typically connected in a ring fashion however other connection configurations may be used.
