The 45C38 model is a Remote Head unit that was introduced to the market by the company Reliance Electric. The 45C38 remote head module is one of the devices that may be connected to the RIOP network. This module is primarily used to interface with the local heads and rails. Also, the remote head has 4 I/O ports where 4 rails, interface modules, local heads, and any combination of those three devices can be connected. In every configuration and revision, the remote head is always a slave device to the RIOP, which is the master.

The 45C38 remote head is made up of three components: its Remote Processor card, its Power Supply, and its metal enclosure which houses them. The processor card includes a high speed UART, an Intel 8031 microprocessor, an I/O interface chip that is designed for communication with all four of its I/O ports, and a female BNC coax connector that was made to connect directly to its network. The power supply has an input voltage of 24 VDC. In addition to that, the power supply is made up of five components: a power failure circuitry, a voltage check, a switching power supply, six status indicator LEDs, and a ready relay which has contacts that are available on the terminal strip.
