About the DC2-72U
The Reliance Electric DC2-72U is a single phase DC motor controller. Compatible with Reliance DC motors, this unit converts AC power to adjustable DC power, offering better torque and speed control. The controller has a reconnectable AC line power, able to input 115 Volts and 230 Volts. Inputting 115 VAC produces 90 VDC, while inputting 230 VAC produces 180 VDC. When operating on 115V, the horsepower output measures at 1.0, while operating at 230V produces an output of 2.0 horsepower.
DC2-72U features a number of options to enhance machine functionality. An improved armature form factor is driven by a full-wave, half-controlled armature voltage rectifier and an included back diode. A half-wave field creates a supply usable for shunt wound DC motors. Other features include a unidirectional operation with a coast-to-rest stop function and an internal thermostat to prevent motor overload. Remote start, stop, run, and jog are also available to further improve user interface.
As this device offers additional process controls, there are a number of speed control functions included on DC2-72U. Both manual and automatic mode are supported via a selector switch. Motor speed adjustments in manual mode are performed by a potentiometer, while automatic mode relies on a process control output signal. Speed control functionality is integrated into the system via armature voltage regulation. Speed control can also be adjusted using a motor mounted DC tachometer. The controller also allows the operator to independently adjust current limits and to separately adjust the minimum and maximum speeds.
The controller is encased in a protective NEMA Type 12 enclosure and is suitable for indoor installation only. This casing offers protection to the drive from small foreign objects and minute water splashes. The enclosure does not protect the device from internal condensation. Proper storage is necessary to maintain the integrity of the drive. The ambient temperature of the operating facility should range from 0℃ to 40℃, or 32℉ to 104℉. All safety and installation guidelines can be found in the corresponding series manual.
