About the 707973-12R
The 707973-12R is a Reliance Electric created Field Current Regulator Cable Assembly. Depending on the year it was manufactured, it may have been produced by ASEA BROWN BOVERI, Baldor Reliance, ELECTROL, or Bradley Allen.
The 707973-12R was created to go on a FlexPak 3000. This cable is used for 3-60HP, 460 VAC Drives. It is the cable that connects the Field Current Regulator to the Field Current Regulator Board. The field is the stationary part of the motor which provides an electromagnetic field that interacts with an armature (or rotor). When you introduce resistance in the field, it reduces the voltage and current of the motor, and thusly reduces the power of the electromagnetic field. It is desirable to do this because it increases the motor speed.
The Field Current Regulator on the FlexPak 3000 is a series of brown and green wires that have a 12 pin PCB Connector (REG P25) on one end and a 10 pin PCB Connector (FLD P6) on the other end. In the center of the cable is a 4 pin Square Connector (FLD P3.) The wires are secured with zip ties to prevent the cable from tangling.
